If you’re looking for books by trans authors, look no further! I curate and maintain a massive list over on Bookshop. There are over 400 titles on this list so far. This includes all identities under the big, wide, inclusive trans umbrella: Nonbinary authors, demigender, agender, genderqueer…all are welcome!
And best of all, this list is ANNOTATED! 💕 Open this list, then use Ctrl+F (or Cmd+F) to search for the genre you’d like to read. You can search for literary fiction, sci-fi/fantasy, romance, YA, memoir, graphic novels, children’s books, poetry, history, science, and more. You can even just search for general fiction and nonfiction. There is truly something for every reader here, no matter their age.
Authors: If your book is not on my list but it is on Bookshop, let me know in the comments and I’ll add it ASAP.
This list, to the best of my knowledge, only includes authors who are openly out. Never do a deep dive on an author’s identity or, worse, ask them to divulge that information. There are a lot of factors that come into play when it comes to being out, including safety, and people should be able to decide if/when they come out.
Publishing is still extremely cis-centered, and it’s important to read trans stories by trans voices! It’s a wonderful feeling to see yourself in a book when the author really gets it. That’s why this list exists!
That being said…
People have many facets to their identity. If you’re a writer who happens to be a redhead, wouldn’t it be weird if everyone expected all of your books to be about being redhead? Yeah, that would be weird. So, not all of the books on this list are about being trans.
A few of my favorite trans-authored books in that category:
- The Last Leaves Falling by Fox Benwell (YA fiction about living with a terminal illness, grief, and friendship)
- The Disordered Cosmos by Chanda Prescod-Weinstein (nonfiction about science/astrophysics and Black feminism)
- The Tea Dragon Society by K. O’Neill (fantasy graphic novel/picture book for all ages that is just pure wholesomeness)
